Staying safe in the Irish heatwave - Vehicle checks

Ireland isn't exactly famous for scorching summers - but when the heat does arrive, it can catch us all off guard. With temperatures forecast to reach the low-to-mid twenties this weekend and dry conditions expected through Monday, Irish drivers need to take a few extra precautions for their vehicles!

At Fitzpatrick's Garages, our service department deals with heat-related car problems every summer. So we've put together a quick and simple guide with some tips and tricks to keep your car in good shape during this warm spell!

How to stay safe while driving in hot weather in Ireland
Heat puts extra stress on a number of your car's systems. A few quick checks now can save you from a breakdown at the worst possible time

Check coolant levels: low coolant is the most common cause of overheating. Check it when the engine is cold, never when the cap is on a hot engine

Tyre pressure: Hot roads cause tyre pressure to rise. Check and adjust to your vehicle's recommended PSI, this can be found on the inside of the driver's door.

Air Conditioning: If your AC isn't blowing out cold air, it may need a regas! Don't wait until your journey starts to find out

Battery health: Heat is hard on car batteries. If your battery is 3 or more years old, a quick test could save you from a breakdown.

Screenwash & wipers: Dust and insects are more common in the dry weather, check that your screenwash is topped up!

Oil levels: Oil thins in high heat, so a quick check on your dipstick to ensure all is in order!

If you're unsure about any of these checks or if your car's temperature warning light comes on while driving, pull over safely as soon as you can and let the engine cool before opening the bonnet. Our service department at Fitzpatricks Garages is on hand to help with any of the checks above. Give us a call or drop in, we're here to keep you moving safely.
